Pacific Rim: A Fangirl Review

Pacific Rim: A Fangirl Review

Every year, Hollywood promises a summer full of blockbuster movies, but how often do they really deliver on that?   We get a lot of sequels and big budget movies that promise to entertain, but often leave us and our wallets feeling empty.

This summer has been hit or miss for me, so far.  I loved Iron Man 3 and Star Trek into Darkness but wasn’t thrilled with Man of Steel, and completely let down by World War Z.  I enjoyed Monsters University and Despicable Me 2 but didn’t leave the theater with the same love I had for the first ones.  Needless to say I had very high hopes that Pacific Rim would even out my summer movie experience.

My interest in this movie started last year at the New York Comic Con.  Guillermo del Toro held a panel with Legendary Studios and discussed Pacific Rim, and buzz over the movie quickly hit the show floor.  Sadly, I couldn’t get in to that panel, but I was infected by the buzz nonetheless and have kept up on its progress ever since.  Let’s face it, del Toro directing  a looming apocalypse, alien monsters that come from the deep rather than space and giant robots built to kick some monster ass…I’m all in!

Pacific Rim is everything a summer blockbuster should be.  First and foremost, you should expect to be entertained, and you will be! Right from the start, we get an introduction into a world that has been invaded by Kaiju, gigantic monsters that do not come in peace.   They defeat the first one with Military firepower, but when they realize there are more, extreme measures must be taken and the Jaeger (Hunter in German) Program is born!

Please bear with me while my inner 12-year-old geeks out for a moment…the monsters are freakin’ cool and scary as hell!  The Kaiju (monster in Japanese) are measured on a Fujita-esque scale from 1-5: 1 being the first to emerge and 5 being the end of life as we know it.  They resemble dinosaurs and I love them all the more for it.  I would love to give more detail on them, but I really don’t want to give too much away. It’s much better to discover that for yourself.  I bit all my nails off during the fighting scenes with the Robots! Each time they would tackle, throw or spit toxic goo at the robots, I thought “Shit! How are they going to defeat this Kaiju?  It’s so powerful!”  As the movie progresses, they just get bigger and badder!

On to the robots!  You can’t help but be fired up over these things!  They are massive! They can fight on land and sea and they have some pretty cool gadgets for kicking some serious Kaiju ass.  Each Jaeger needs two pilots to control it, the stronger the bond between them, the better they fight.  The fight sequences between the Jaegers and the Kaiju are jaw-dropping.  We see them fight in all kinds of places, but the best one takes place in the Hong Kong bay.  The colorful background of Hong Kong and the intense fight between multiple Jaegers makes for one intense battle scene that garnered cheers from the audience at the end of it.  My personal favorite Jaeger was the Gypsy Danger, but they were all awesome.  I’m sure you’ll have your own favorite.

Pacific Rim is 132 minutes of pure fun!  The plot is simple—Monsters bad, Robots good—but it’s a joy to watch.  Again, with this movie, the human storyline may take a backseat at times, but, honestly, who cares?  There’s enough of it to keep the story going and stay interested until the next epic battle. Personally, I liked the story; I thought it was well told and paced perfectly.  I cared just enough about everyone to feel something for them when they were in danger and to shed a tear or two at the end when…oh I won’t spoil it.

Go see this movie!  If you’re tired of the crap that Hollywood gives you 90% of the time, then go see this movie and let the box office show that we still want original movies that for once can truly be called a summer blockbuster!

A New Fangirl Adventure!

A New Fangirl Adventure!

Dawn and I are always looking for new ways to share our nerd news and opinions with other Fangirls  Fanboys, so what better way to do it than a podcast!  We have joined forces with our good friends Nicholas Strange from Strange Amusements and fellow TV Fangirl Holly to create Strange Adventures podcast!

For months, we have wanted to create a podcast but getting it off the ground was proving to be a challenge.  Nick was having the same issue trying to get his own podcast off the ground for Strange Amusements.  It seemed to us that combining our Fangirl adventures and Nick’s love of all things nerdy and horror-related seemed a no-brainer.  So, Strange Adventures podcast was born!

For our first episode, we chose to talk about Man of Steel and Marvel vs. DC in the cinema.  We had a lot of fun with this topic, even if some fanboys and fangirls don’t agree with us.  We welcome feedback and show suggestions; it’s all part of the fun with a podcast!

We hope you download and enjoy our first Strange Adventures podcast!  We have some great upcoming shows planned and we hope you come along for the adventure with us.

You can download our first podcast and all future podcasts at
Strange Adventures podcast.

You can also reach the podcast through our email and on our new Facebook page and finally on Twitter @Strangeadvcast.

As always you can reach Fangirl Adventures at our email and on our Facebook as well as on Twitter @Fangrladventure

Please check out our friend and co-host Nicholas Strange’s page . You can also follow him on Twitter @NicholasStrange for the latest horror movie and book news and reviews!

Thank you for all your support with our Fangirl Adventures! We love bringing them to you!

Man of Steel: A Fangirl Review

Man of Steel:  A Fangirl Review

It’s a bird...It’s a plane...It’s… Superman?

As a kid I was definitely a DC fan!  I loved the Justice League and Wonder Woman was my hero—I have the Underoos to prove it.  I was never a huge Batman fan, but I enjoyed the Tim Burton movies, Batman Forever, and fanboys forgive me, Batman and Robin.  I know not a popular movie by fanboy standards, but I thought it was fun, except for maybe the nipples on the Bat suit, eww, ok bad flashback.

Let’s get this out of the way right now: I’m not a fan of Nolan’s Batman Trilogy.  I know most Fanboys and Fangirls LOVE it, but I just never connected with it.  There’s just something about superheroes being too grounded in everyday reality that turns me off.   So if you’ve seen Man of Steel, you might already know one of the problems I had with it.

There will be spoilers ahead for Man of Steel so if you haven’t seen it yet, come back and read this after you have and let me know what you think.

Superman has never been my favorite superhero, but I still loved him, so I was so excited to see this installment.  I’m a fan of Zack Snyder and I felt confident that he could do an amazing job with the material, and every trailer released for this movie blew me away.  I was beyond hopeful for it to wow me… sadly it did not.

Let me focus on some positive aspects that I really liked about the movie.  I liked the fact that they went in another direction rather than trying to remake a Christopher Reeve-esque movie.  He will forever be our ultimate Superman and you can’t recreate that. Superman Returns tried and failed which is why I think fans can’t get behind it.  A less Campy approach worked for me.

I also liked what they did with Lois Lane.  I liked the fact that she wasn’t as clueless and helpless as the original character and I liked that she new Superman was Clark Kent!  That drove me crazy in the originals!!  How do you not know that’s the same guy?  I also liked the fact that she saw the bigger picture; she wasn’t just in it for the story or for the front page of the Daily Planet.  She knew the consequences of her actions if she revealed his true identity.

What didn’t work for me? A lot!  I wasn’t sure about the back and forth storytelling showing Clark’s childhood and his adult struggles with his identity. Sometimes it took me out of the story.  The battle scenes, while visually stunning, were too long and I got bored at the end.  After all the destruction, things just went back to normal.  They wanted to ground this movie in reality, but there’s no acknowledgment of the clean up and death that Metropolis went through.  The Superman I know wouldn’t have destroyed all those buildings.  He would have taken the battle to space to save the city and the people, same goes for the destruction of Smallville.  Superman would do whatever it took to save human life.  I just didn’t feel that in this movie.

I guess my biggest disappointment with Man of Steel is instead of DC making a movie that shows Superman at his moral best, they took the character and made him fit into the world we live in today.  Superman should represent the best of what humanity can be. We should strive to be more like him, not the other way around.

Even though I didn’t love it like I wanted to, I’m glad it made money at the box office for DC.  I want a Justice League movie and I know the only way we’ll get one is if Man of Steel did well.  Maybe Man of Steel 2 will be better, and Superman will be the way he should be: a beacon of hope for which humanity can strive, not a reminder of what we already are.

The Hangover III: A Fangirl Review

The Hangover III: A Fangirl Review

The Wolfpack is back for a final trip of mayhem in the Hangover III.  I loved the first movie. It was a nice approach to a buddy comedy that I hadn’t seen before, and I thought it worked really well.  The then virtually unknown stars Bradley Copper, Ed Helms and Zack Galafinakis were hilarious in their respective roles and grounded their characters just enough to make the outrageous situations they were put in somewhat believable.

Same goes for The Hangover II.  I’ll admit when I first watched it I wasn’t completely sold on it.  I thought, why are we telling the same story again only in Bangkok, not Las Vegas.  But after several re-watches, thanks to HBO, I found myself loving it, maybe even more than the original.  The formula doesn’t work against it as I first thought; it’s what makes the movie better than just a typical buddy comedy movie.  That being said, here lies the problem with The Hangover III.  I think there was so much backlash against the second one following the same formula that Director Todd Philips went out of his way to not do it again in Hangover III, and the movie just isn’t as much fun because of it.

Not having a mysterious night to solve makes for a dull movie that not even Mr. Chow can save.  All the way through the movie, I kept waiting for there to be some drug induced memory loss, but no such luck.  Trying to change Allen’s character is a big mistake.  He will always be a child trapped in a man’s body, and I love him for it and deep down so do Phil and Stu.  There are hundreds of ways they could have ended this trilogy, but the way they picked left me feeling flat and unsatisfied.  My favorite scene of the movie was the last one before the credits! I won’t give it away, but at least it gave me a smile and a hearty laugh, something the movie failed to do in the first hour and thirty-five minutes.
